Last Laker Standing finals to be held Saturday, Feb. 10

The final installment of Last Laker Standing, the annual stand-up comedy competition for students at Grand Valley State University, is set for Saturday, Feb. 10, starting at 8 p.m. in the Kirkhof Center Pere Marquette Room.

The competition, put on by Spotlight Productions, has given GVSU students a chance to test out their comedic chops, make their peers laugh and see if they have what it takes to be named the Last Laker Standing. The event is free and all are welcome to attend.

Speed reading course set for Saturday, Feb. 10

A speed reading course is set for Saturday, Feb. 10, to help Grand Valley State University students learn techniques to make keeping up with assigned class readings easier and more manageable. The course will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Kindschi Hall of Science. 

Sponsored by the GVSU Lions Club, the four-hour event will be designed for approaching technical material more efficiently in order to help students not only get through their readings at a quicker pace but also remember what they read. 

Interested students can RSVP online, where costs are being subsidized with the code GVSU2018.

Music audition day being held Saturday, Feb. 10

Auditions for acceptance into the Grand Valley State University music program are set to be held  Saturday, Feb. 10, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Thomas J. and Marcia J. Haas Center for Performing Arts. 

The GVSU music program offers students the option of major, minor and piano pedagogy programs. For accepted students interested in performance, composition, music technology, graduate studies in music or studio teaching, the GVSU music program offers a study track.

Latin publishers event set for Monday, Feb. 12

The Grand Valley State University department of Latin American and Latino/a studies is set to host Ksenija Bilbija, a professor from the department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, to give a lecture about cartonera publishers. Bilbija’s lecture will be held from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 12, in the Kirkhof Center, Room 2263.

The event, called “Handmade Future: Cartonera Publishers in Latin America and Beyond,” is LIB 100-
and 201-approved and is free for all interested GVSU students, faculty, staff and community to attend.
