Women’s hockey goes 2-1 in Rhode Island

The Grand Valley State University women’s club hockey team posted a 2-1 record at the Rhode Island Showcase over the weekend at the Brad Boss Ice Arena in Kingston, R.I.

GVSU (7-2) began the weekend with a 4-2 victory against the University of Vermont.

Senior forward Alisha Day scored the eventual game-winning goal with 14:26 to play in the third as the Lakers held on after recording a 46-22 edge in shots on goal.

Sophomore forward Stacey Mathieu led the way with two goals and an assist two days later when GVSU bested Northeastern University 3-1. She finished the weekend with a team-high five points.

The stat line showed an impressive performance from senior goalie Karen Sloboda, who made 37 saves in the victory.

The Lakers lost a 2-1 heartbreaker in their final game of the event on Sunday against the University of Rhode Island, which hosted the event with three wins and no losses.

Senior forward Kristen Iannuzzi’s scored the lone goal for GVSU in the first, but Rhode Island rallied with a pair of third-period goals.

GVSU will compete in a home-and-home set with Davenport University this weekend, starting at the Georgetown Ice Arena on Friday at 8 p.m.
