GVSU Women’s Tennis knocks off undefeated Indiana Wesleyan squad on Friday

The Grand Valley State women’s tennis team improved their record to 12-2 on the year with a 5-2 victory over a previously undefeated Indiana Wesleyan Friday.

GVSU won the doubles point with wins by Vera Griva and Taylor Barrett (6-3) at No. 1 doubles and Marily Canellopoulos and Marija Leko (6-2) at No. 2 doubles. Griva opened singles action with a three-set (6-2, 3-6,10-8) win at No. 1 singles, while Leko (6-4, 6-3), Liv Hanover (6-4, 6-3) and Olivia Huang (6-1, 7-6) claimed straight set wins in the four, five and six singles slots.

GVSU Softball picked to win GLIAC in preseason coaches poll

The Grand Valley State Lakers are the unanimous selection to win the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) in the annual preseason coaches’ poll. The Lakers, ranked No. 3 in the nation after last year’s trip to the College World Series, have won three straight GLIAC regular season titles, and are have won the last two GLIAC Tournament champions.

GVSU went 51-10 a season ago, hitting the 50-win mark for the second time in school history and making the program’s fourth-ever trip to the College World Series after sweeping through the GLIAC Tournament, NCAA Regional and Super Regional. The Lakers hit .326 as a team, scored 376 runs and posted a 1.63 team ERA, all of which led the GLIAC.

The heart of last year’s Laker lineup all return this season after finishing as the top three RBI producers in the GLIAC in 2019. Reigning All-American Nikoma Holmen hit .389 as a sophomore, clubbing 12 home runs and driving in 63 runs; all of which were among the top-5 in the league. Lydia Goble, an NFCA All-Region selection, exploded onto the scene as a freshman, leading the GLIAC with 65 RBI while hitting .361 with 14 homers. Taylor Rieger finished third with 51 RBI while hitting .295 with 10 big flies.
