Authorities are still searching for a suspicious male suspect seen staring into off-campus apartments around 48th Avenue and Pierce Street earlier this month. The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office started receiving reports of the man in late September, which continued into early October.
The several reported incidents all occurred between midnight and 3 a.m. The subject was captured in surveillance and phone pictures.
“Sheriff’s detectives continue their attempts to identify the subject, and are looking for assistance in identifying photos (of) a person or persons possibly related to this activity,” stated a Sheriff’s Office news release.
Grand Valley State University’s Department of Public Safety was unable to comment on the open case, but Captain Leah Heaton recommended shutting window blinds or curtains at night, installing exterior lighting and having a Ring doorbell installed. Heaton recommended students alert their neighbors and police if they witness any suspicious activity.
“If you feel you have been a victim, call the police, keep records of incidents (and) collect visual evidence if possible and if safe to do so,” Heaton said.
Students living in the affected off-campus apartments have expressed concerns as the investigation continues.
“As someone who lives (in the area), this is pretty concerning,” said student Brooke Van De Burg. “My roommates and I have been extra sure to keep doors and windows locked at this time in fear of our safety and privacy. I hope this issue does not go on for long.”
Other safety tips include putting a frosted film over windows, trimming landscaping around the area to reduce the amount of hiding spots and to ensure all windows and doors are locked at night. Additionally, students should avoid walking home alone at night and have a cellphone available at all times.
There have been no reports of the suspect attempting to break into the apartments, and no items have been reported stolen.
Anyone with information or evidence related to the investigation is asked to contact the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office at (616) 738-4000. Anonymous tips can be sent to 1-877-88-SILENT (745-368).
