GVSU volleyball drops two GLIAC match-ups to Wayne State and Ashland

The Grand Valley State volleyball team lost their two home match-ups this weekend, losing to Ashland on Dig Pink Night 3-0 on Friday, Oct. 19 before losing to Wayne State on youth day on Saturday, Oct. 20. After the losses, the Lakers fall to 12-12 on the year as well as 5-8 in the GLIAC.

Despite losing handily to Ashland on Friday, GVSU was still able to have more aces than Ashland, as well as earning points on 19.5 percent of their opportunities. Abby Graham and Kendall Yerkes each had 2 aces, and Staci Brower led all volleyball players with four blocks.

The Wayne State contest was closer than Friday’s game, as the Lakers dropped three close sets to the Wayne State Warriors (20-25, 29-31, 22-25). Alexandra Thompson led all Lakers with 16 kills, while Frankie Cavallaro posted 35 assists.

The GVSU volleyball team looks to improve upon their record this season, as they host Davenport on senior night on Saturday, Oct. 27. The match is set to start at 4 p.m.

GVSU Swimming and Diving Sweeps Lewis

Both the men’s and women’s swimming teams picked up wins this weekend at Lewis University, as the Laker men won 130.5 to 74.5 and the Laker women claimed a 141.5 to 43.5 victory.

For the men, the 400 medley team of Harry Shalamon, Keegan Hawkins, Gabriel Souza and Ben Walling earned first place with a time of 3:27.02. Mortiz Bartels, Oscar Saura Armengol also picked up victories in the 1000 free and the 200 fly, respectively.

For the women, GVSU’s Freyja Garbaccio, Samantha Laurich, Hannah Richard and Lara Deibel placed first in the 400 medley with a time of 3:57.46. Melina Goebel picked up a victory in 1000 free, while Caroline Brereton touched the wall first in the 200 free.

The GVSU swimming & diving remains undefeated on the year (7-0), as they travel to Marquette to swim against Saginaw Valley State, Northen Michigan and Ball State on Saturday, Nov. 3. The meet is set to start at 12:30 p.m.

GVSU women’s tennis sweeps SVSU in Saturday’s action, 7-0.

The Grand Valley State women’s tennis team earned an important GLIAC win after they defeated Saginaw Valley State on Saturday, Oct. 20, sweeping the Cardinals 7-0.

The Lakers were dominant in double’s matches, as Vera Griva and Marily Canellopoulos won 6-2 from the No.1 position. Madison Ballard and Nicole Heiniger also won 6-2 from the No.2 spot, as well as Livia Christman and Marija Leko won 6-2 from the No. 3 position.

GVSU continued their strong play into singles action, as all the Lakers previously mentioned also won their singles matches to sweep the Cardinals.

Grand Valley State will play Northwood on Sunday, Oct. 21 for their final GLIAC regular season match, which is set to start at 12 p.m. in Midland.
