Watching the Grand Rapids Public Museum come to life

Anush Yepremyan

This semester, I held an internship in the Grand Rapids Public Museum (GRPM), and I have absolutely enjoyed it. I have learned a lot, met a lot of wonderful people and attended some outstanding events. Coming up soon, there is another event called “Night at Your Museum” that I highly recommend attending.

Growing up, my sister and would watch the movie, “Night at the Museum” every year around Christmas time. I am sure everyone who has seen this movie wishes they could be in Larry’s shoes and experience the mystery of the museum due to the magic of an ancient Egyptian curse.

However, as they say, be careful what you wish for, because wishes tend to come true.

The Grand Rapids Public Museum is granting your wish and bringing all your favorite characters from the movies to life by hosting its annual event based on the popular movies. “Night at Your Museum” is held on Dec. 27.

The event starts at 6 p.m. with the dimly lit museum and decorations creating the mysterious atmosphere of the movie. The audience will be given a souvenir flashlight and honorary security badge. Stepping into the drama of the movie, the characters from the various exhibits will come to life, including Cleopatra, Betsy Ross, Native Americans, Civil War soldiers, knights, the queen and more.

Guests can take a ride on the 1928 Spillman Carousel. The action also includes a “real” medieval knight battle complete with swords and the opportunity to learn about castle life and what it takes to be a Knight of the Realm. Native Americans will perform ceremonial dances in full regalia and the Civil War soldiers will reenact a few skirmishes. There will even be a Mighty Wurlitzer Theater Organ concert and a planetarium show located in the newly renovated Chaffee Planetarium.

This is one of my favorite events hosted by the Grand Rapids Public Museum. I would highly recommend going to this event, especially if you have or know any kids to bring along. They will have the chance to be part of the mystery and adventure. Make sure to put this on your list for something to do during your Christmas break.
