CPR author set to visit GVSU

Sheri Fink, author of the current Community Reading Project selection “Five Days at Memorial,” will visit Grand Valley State University to discuss her book in a public presentation.

“Five Days at Memorial” is about the disastrous effects of Hurricane Katrina seen through the perspective of a New Orleans Hospital. Fink’s book won the National Book Critics Circle Award for Nonfiction and was included on the New York Times best-selling list.

The first presentation will take place at 7 p.m. on March 24 at the Herrick District Library in Holland. Fink will follow this up with a second presentation at 7 p.m. on March 25 in the Kirkhof Center.

Community as Classroom tackles “wicked” problems

The upcoming Community as Classroom will aim to instruct teachers on how to better prepare students in their approach to “wicked” problems.

The event, titled “Community-based Teaching in a Wicked World: Preparing Students for Messy Inquiry,” will tackle “wicked” issues defined as dynamically complex and interdependent with no clear solution.

Danielle Lake, assistant professor of liberal studies, and Anna Sluka, member of various organizations against poverty, will speak at the lecture.

Sponsored by the Office of Community Engagement, the event will take place from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on March 20 inside the University Club at the DeVos Center, located on the Grand Valley State University Pew campus in Grand Rapids.

GVSU alum to screen critically acclaimed film

Joel Potrykus, Grand Valley State University alumnus, will bring his feature film “Buzzard” to the Allendale campus for a public screening.

“Buzzard” follows con-artist Marty as he is forced into the streets of Detroit after his latest job goes wrong. This film marks the third and final installment in the Potrykus Animal Trilogy.

The screening will take place from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, March 18 in Lake Superior Hall, Room 154. Following the film, people can participate in a Q&A session with the director.

College of Education 50th anniversary

Faculty, students, staff, alumni and retirees will help celebrate the College of Education’s 50th anniversary by looking forward to the future of Grand Valley State University education at a special event on March 24.

Titled “A Celebration of the College of Education: Reflections & Predictions,” the event occurs in the Loosemore Auditorium at the DeVos Center on the Pew Grand Rapids Campus. The celebration will include a reception from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. as well as a panel discussion from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Sustainability Champions Awards

The seventh annual Sustainability Champions Awards is now accepting nominations for students, faculty, staff and community members who are helping create change through sustainable living.

Nominations are run through the Office of Sustainability Practices and are due by March 27. To nominate, go to www.gvsu.edu/sustainability/breakfast-313.htm.
