Quick Hits: Women’s Tennis beats Ferris, GVSU XC and T & F have annual car wash, GVSU soccer beats Davenport

GVSU Women’s Tennis earns 6-1 victory over Ferris State

The Grand Valley State women’s tennis team opened the 2018-19 season and earned a 6-1 victory over Ferris State on Saturday, Sept. 22. With the win, GVSU improves to 1-0 overall and 1-0 in the GLIAC.

Marily Canellopoulos and Vera Griva earned a 6-2 win from the No. 1 doubles pairing, while Livia Christman and Liv Hanover secured the point for GVSU with a 6-3 victory from the No. 3 spot.

The Lakers were dominant in singles competition, as they took five of the six matches. Nicole Ballard won 6-1 from the No. 1 spot, while Griva claimed a victory from the No. 2 spot, 6-0, 6-1. Marija Leko also gained a victory from the No. 3 position, winning swiftly in three sets.

GVSU will hit the road next week, as they travel to Caledonia, Mich. to face Davenport on Wednesday, Sept. 26 at 6 p.m.

GVSU cross country, track & field donate money from annual car wash

The Grand Valley State cross country and track & field teams were hard at work on Saturday, Sept. 15 as they were washing cars in various locations around Allendale for their annual car wash fundraiser.

Cleaning cars of all models, colors, shapes and sizes, the Lakers raised a total of $2,243.31 from the event, all of which was donated to the Make-A-Wish..

The teams spread out all around West Michigan and the Grand Rapids, washing cars at the McDonald’s in Allendale, the Arby’s in Walker and Grandville, Mich., the Mr. Burger in Walker and the Big Boy in downtown Grand Rapids.

With the money that was raised from this year’s fundraiser, the GVSU cross country and track & field teams have now raised over $8,000 over the last four years from the car wash.

GVSU soccer remains undefeated, beats Davenport 2-0 on Sunday

On a windy day when many students were either doing homework or watching football, the Grand Valley State women’s soccer team on the road in Caledonia, shutting out Davenport 2-0.

Freshmen Madeline Becker got the scoring started in the eighth minute of the game, converting a header off the crossbar off a pass from fellow freshmen Timia Robinson. Becker was able to find the back of the net again in the 13th minute, tapping the ball in after another pass from Robinson.

Defense was a key to the victory for the Lakers, as they held to Panthers to only four shots in the game, including zero in the first half. They were also able to keep their cool against a physical DU team, as they were drew eight fouls on Davenport including one yellow card.

The GVSU soccer team looks to stay undefeated on the season as they travel to Indiana for a match with GLIAC rival Purdue-Northwest on Friday, Sept. 28. The game is set to begin at 2:30 p.m.
