GV Basketball alumna named award finalist 

Former GVSU women’s basketball star Cassidy Boensch has been named a top 30 finalist for the NCAA Women of the Year Awards.

Boensch started at center for the Lakers and averaged 14.2 points and 7.7 rebounds in her collegiate career. She is a two-time GLIAC Player of the Year award recipient and leads the Lakers all time in blocked shots with 295.  

Big Ten football returns 

The Big Ten is back after the conference announced they will move forward with their football season for 2020. Games will begin Oct. 24, with an eight game conference schedule. The Big Ten will start the latest out of all the Power Five conferences and will play the fewest games. 

The Big Ten championship is slated for Dec. 19 with the winner of the winners of the East and West playing each other. Some key matchup dates are Michigan State at Michigan on Oct. 31 and Minnesota at Wisconsin Nov. 28. Ohio State will go to Michigan during the last week of play on Dec. 5, the same day as Michigan State playing Penn State.

High school football seasons kick off 

High school football is back. Games kicked off last week for teams around West Michigan. 

Rockford beat Jenison 16 to 13. Rockford starting quarterback Zak Ahern struggled early in his first varsity start, leading him to get benched in the third quarter. However, he took the field again in the fourth and led Rockford to a comeback victory. This is Rockford’s first victory under new head coach Brent Cummings. 

Other scores include Hudsonville defeating East Kentwood 21-13. Grandville defeated Grand Haven 62-18. Byron Center beat Forest Hills Northern 38-7. Allendale won against Holland Christian 44-23.
