MSU Police and Public Safety recovered a body from the Red Cedar River at 12:30 p.m. on Jan. 21. The body was approximately 1.5 miles downriver from where Grand Valley State University student Brandan Santo was last seen after his disappearance on Oct. 29, 2021.
The body is believed to be Santo, but the identification is still pending. The Santo family has been informed.
Santo went missing in Lansing after visiting friends for the MSU/University of Michigan football game.
The MSU Police with assistance from multiple law enforcement agencies and community members have been searching for Santo for more than 80 days.
“We are deeply saddened by this tragic loss and our thoughts and prayers go out to the Santo family and all of those who knew Brendan,” said MSU Police and Public Safety in a press release.
GVSU President Philomena Mantella responded to the news.
“Our university role at this time is to support Brendan’s family, roommates, professors and friends,” Mantella said in an email. “The death of any student in our community is painful and distressing. Staff members from the Division of Student Affairs, including Housing and Residence Life and University Counseling, are available to support any student in need.”
