Train to be a medical scribe through GVSU Scribe Academy
On Feb. 9, the GVSU Scribe Academy will be providing free medical scribe training. Medical scribes work at emergency departments and other medical offices, so students with writing skills majoring in health professions may be interested in this profession. Scribe training can also provide useful clinical experiences to bolster a resume. Attendees can choose training locations to attend through LakerLink.

The Career Center is hosting a “Meet the Employers” event on Feb. 9 for those interested in economics careers. The event will be attended by faculty advisors, alumni, and field professionals who will present on the skills and experiences required to be successful in the economics field. Despite the event being virtual, it is designated as business professional so attendees should dress nicely. Students, alumni, and staff are all welcome to attend.
Learn about authentic leadership from Graci Harkema
On Feb. 11, Graci Harkema, owner of international DEI consulting firm Graci LLC is giving a presentation on leadership development and inclusive work environments. Harkema, who also serves on several LGBTQ+ nonprofit boards and was recognized by Grand Rapids Business Journal as a powerful West Michigan business leader, is an advocate for helping employees feel empowered to reach their true potential. This event is only open to students.
Get introduced to accounting professsions
The Career Center is continuing the “Meet the Employers” event on Feb. 10 for accounting students. Faculty from the accounting department and employers from local accounting firms and corporations will attend this virtual informational event. Recruiters and employers are starting to recruit for upcoming winter and summer internships, so this is a great way for interested students to get their foot in the door early. The event is open to all students, not just accounting majors.
Examine the Taliban’s takeover of higher education in Afghanistan
Scholars at Risk is hosting a presentation on the what has happened to higher education in Afghanistan since the Taliban took over the country. Said Reza Kazemi Ph.D., visiting researcher at Heidelberg University is presenting his findings based on interviews with university administrators, lecturers, and students from Afghanistan. The presentation will also cover the challenges to academic freedom and what the future of higher education in Afghanistan looks like. The event is being held virtually on Feb. 11.
Learn valuable sex education as part of GVSU’s Sex Ed Week
The Recreation and Wellness department is partnering with the Center of Women and Gender Equity, the GV Family Health Center, and the health departments from Ottawa and Kent counties to host Sex Ed Week. This week-long series of events includes a sexual health panel, group yoga, STI testing and condom-based games at Condompalooza. Events will be held in person and online and are open to all students.
