Picture this: it’s football season. You’re sitting on your couch with a group of friends watching a Lions game. All of a sudden, there’s a knock on the door– your pizza is here. You return from the front door, pizza in hand, and the cheesy, tomato sauce smell fills the room. Everyone digs in. It’s a good night for most people, but I beg to differ.
I spent two years working in a pizza place, so I’ve seen the late night cravings, and the numerous orders for tailgating. I still don’t understand the craze, and I have numerous reason why.
It’s inconsistent
Pizza is incredibly inconsistent. Sometimes it’s crispy, and other times the center is still doughy. Sometimes there’s a lot of cheese, and other times there’s barely any. It can be super saucy, or have almost no sauce at all. If I were to order a special crust, or make topping modifications, they are often missing. While meals can get altered at any restaurant, I want to know what I’m getting when I order food. Let’s face it, perfect orders isn’t something that happens when ordering pizza.
It’s unhealthy
We’ve all heard that pizza is unhealthy. It’s high in saturated fats, which can increase cholesterol levels and the risk of heart disease. It’s also high in calories, which can cause weight gain. You can add carbs and sodium to the list of things that pizza has an excess of. Obviously, if you’re eating pizza in moderation, these factors aren’t super important. However, if you’re a regular pizza eater, you might want to consider cutting back.
It’s messy
I feel like I shouldn’t have to use a napkin to dab grease off of my pizza before being able to enjoy it. I hate the oil it leaves on my fingertips, which then gets on my table, phone screen and clothes. When picking up an order, setting a greasy pizza box on your car seat might leave a stain. On top of this, the sauce can drip or all the cheese will come off in one piece, which makes eating slices a task. I don’t want to wrestle with my food to eat it.
It can get pretty expensive
Pizza can be a cheap option if people are pitching in, or if you’re grabbing a Hot-N-Ready pizza, but it can also get pretty expensive. If I were to go to Cottage Inn or Domino’s, I’d be spending at least $20 on a large pizza. Heaven forbid I want to add a 2 liter soda or breadsticks. Unless you’re using dining dollars at Jet’s or getting a special, I don’t think the price is worth it. You’re better off getting a Build Your Own Cravings Box from Taco Bell for $7.
It’s too popular
Growing up, school parties and birthday parties always had pizza. Parents often order pizza for a night of no cooking. In college, they serve pizza at academic and sporting events. Friend groups order it because it’s a quick meal. Pizza is so popular, and I get sick of it. Please, no more pizza. There are other options, I promise.
Considering these reasons, the next time you want to order a pizza, try something new instead. Your taste buds will thank you.
