The use of Artificial Intelligence is highly debated, as it has weaved its way into schools, workplaces and our day-to-day routines. It feels that AI has become an everyday tool in some people’s lives, and I just don’t like it at all. I think AI has the possibility to be destructive, and on top of that, I find it flat-out scary. I’ve been scared of robots and associated technology since I was young, and now I’ve seen my biggest fear come to life. Regardless, I didn’t think a reality with AI would become so normalized.
When we overuse AI in our schools and workplaces, we are training AI to do our homework and jobs. The technology’s ‘intelligence” comes from data collection and the interactions we, as users, feed into it. By relying on AI for tasks that are best done by human beings, we are teaching this technology to replace us. People may think this skepticism against AI is simply paranoia, but in my opinion, we are not that far off from AI infringing upon our autonomy as humans. Millions of artists, writers and editors have already lost their jobs to AI; is anybody safe?
One main concern I have about AI comes from its integration into my academics. Many of my peers use AI to complete the entirety of their work, and it’s disturbing. Despite paying for classes, those relying on AI can expect not to learn anything. In addition, the use of AI doesn’t just impact those using the technology, it also impacts others in academia. Understandably, the overuse of AI in higher education has made professors wary. Using AI for homework is already a mistake, but using AI in group projects is also common. In my opinion, using it in this regard is the most selfish use of the technology. Using AI in group projects can fail everybody, and you’re also not putting in the same amount of effort as your peers. From my perspective, this is more common than not, unfortunately.
Not only do we have AI complete our homework for us, but some people use AI to complete personal tasks. Duties like creating shopping lists, sending text messages, scheduling emails and other tasks can be completed by AI, and often are. While I understand being drawn to a tool that can help with “insignificant tasks,” I think AI has completely drained any sort of individuality from us. Despite its possible benefits, I think what we use AI for currently has already gone way too far.
