A 19-year-old Grand Valley State University student died May 10 after being shot at a Tallmadge Township house party. On May 15, deputies identified the victim as Connor Lotterman, who was studying engineering.

The shooting happened May 9 after 11 p.m. in the area of 2nd Avenue near Lake Michigan Drive NW.

According to a report from MLive, a 20-year-old Jenison man was in the home’s upstairs bedroom and fired multiple rounds from his loaded gun through the floor, and Lotterman was shot in the head. He was taken to the hospital, where he later died. Authorities have not released the name of the shooter at this time. Approximately 10 to 20 attendees were present at the party.

Alcohol is suspected to be involved in the incident. While the county medical examiner has ruled Lotterman’s death accidental, prosecutors are reviewing possible criminal charges against the shooter. According to WOOD-TV, Captain Jake Sparks of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department said the shooting, which led to the accidental death, was intentional.

“The Grand Valley community is saddened by Connor’s tragic death,” GVSU Dean of Students Aaron Haight said in a statement. “On behalf of President Mantella, the Laker community extends our deepest sympathies to his family and friends. Students may utilize the Care referral process and the University Counseling Center for support and resources during this difficult time. Faculty and staff can access mental health services via the Employee Assistance Program.”

Memorial services were held for Lotterman on Thursday and Friday in Hudsonville, and a funeral was held on Saturday at Grace Protestant Reformed Church in Grand Rapids. Lotterman was born in Grand Rapids and was the youngest of five children. He graduated from Covenant Christian High School in 2023.
