Pinball, Music and Brews
The band Joe Hertler & the Rainbow Seekers will share their indie-rock sound with Grand Rapids when they perform at the Pyramid Scheme on Jan. 31 at 8 p.m. This local Michigan band from the east side of the state will share the stage with American Opera and Watching for Foxes. Laughing Under Pressure
The Master Arts Theatre, located on 77th Street in Grand Rapids, presents two nights of spontaneous comedy on Jan. 30 and 31 . Contents Under Pressure is a comedic improv group that makes the audience part of the show. This event is not covered by season tickets, but tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for students and seniors. A Meanwhile Film
Fall into the mind of Tim Burton in his unusual tale “Beetlejuice.” On Jan. 27, the Wealthy Theatre will feature the whimsical tale of a young couple that purchases a house that is more than what they bargained for. This 1988 hit takes viewers back to a time of “The Breakfast Club,” “Pee-wee’s Big Adventure” and “Robin Hood: Men in Tights.” The film begins at 8 p.m. For more information, visit www.grcmc.org/theatre.
“The Who’s Tommy”
The Kalamazoo Civic Theatre presents a rock opera Jan. 25 – Feb. 7. In 1969 The Who released a rock album that was later transformed into “The Who’s Tommy.” The opera highlights songs such as “Tommy Can You Hear Me, I’m Free,” “Pinball Wizard” and “See Me, Feel Me.” The plot of the opera follows a young boy, who is deaf, dumb and blind, as he plays pinball and grows to understand the world. An ArtPrize Encore
Beginning Jan. 25 the Grand Rapids Art Museum will display pieces that were featured in ArtPrize 2014. Ten to 15 pieces from the competition were selected to be displayed in the “Encore!” exhibition.
