Laker swim and dive wins
The Grand Valley State swim and dive team continued its strong start to the season with men’s wins over Calvin College and Lewis, and women’s wins over Calvin, Lewis and Hillsdale. On Friday night in Grand Rapids, the men beat Calvin 184-59, while the women topped Hillsdale 193-44 and Calvin 201-41.
Senior Gianni Ferrero recorded two event wins to lead the GVSU men, while Leonie Van Noort captured two wins of her own to pace the Laker women.
On Saturday, the Lakers returned home to host Lewis in a men’s and women’s meet. GVSU swept the meet as the men won 150-81, and the women claimed a 176-53 win. The Laker women dominated, winning all 13 events, while the men won nine events of their own.
GVSU returns to the pool at home against Northern Michigan on Oct. 31 at 11 a.m.
GVSU men’s club soccer bounced from playoffs
The Grand Valley State men’s club soccer team bowed out of the Midwest Alliance Soccer Conference regional playoffs with a 1-1 (3-1) shootout loss to Loyola University Chicago on Sunday morning. The Lakers beat Cincinnati 1-0 to open the tournament, but fell to the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse 2-1 in the second round.
The Lakers were tied 1-1 with LUC after full time and overtime, but were unable to convert their share of penalty kicks as their season ended after a shootout loss for the second consecutive season. See the full story on lanthorn.com
Division II men’s hockey takes first loss of 2015
Following a 9-0 start to the 2015 season, the Grand Valley State Division II men’s hockey club dropped its first game of the season in a home tilt against Southern Illinois University – Edwardsville. SIUE trumped the Lakers 5-4 in the first game of the weekend at Georgetown Ice Center thanks to a pair of early goals.
GVSU (10-1) responded in the second game of the series at home against SIUE, demolishing the Cougars 9-0 to resume its winning ways. The Lakers return to action on Oct. 30 with a home game against Ferris State at 8 p.m. See the full story on lanthorn.com
