Associate professor named associate executive director of scholarly journal
Associate Director of Area and Global Studies Tracy Flemming was appointed associate executive editor of “Africology: The Journal of Pan African Studies,” a journal dedicated to “the intellectual synthesis of research, scholarship and critical thought on the African experience around the world” according to its website. The Journal’s editorial board includes professionals and educators from all around the world.
Executive Editor Itibari Zulu said that Flemming’s first assignment in the new position will be working with him to edit 27 different articles for an anthology titled “Africology 2.0: Engaging Disciplinary Approaches.”
Career Center wraps up application process for W.O.W. Career Exploration Program
Grand Valley State University’s Career Center’ World of Work (W.O.W.) Career Exploration Program closes its application process on Monday, Nov. 12. The program encourages students to gain a better understanding of the workplace environment across a variety of career opportunities ranging from Legal Services to Nonprofit Management to Accounting and Finance.
Students involved in the program will be able to select partnered employers throughout the week. Following preparation in the CareerLab until the end of November, students will visit their workplaces on Nov. 30.

GV hosts 8th Annual Veteran’s Day Breakfast, celebrates service
Students, faculty, staff and guests gathered in the Kirkhof Center on Nov. 9 to celebrate the contributions of the many GVSU-connected veterans during the university’s 8th Annual Veteran’s Day Breakfast.
The breakfast included a performance of The Star-Spangled Banner by GVSU’s acapella group, Eurphoria, amongst speakers and recognitions. GVSU President Thomas Haas, who served as a captain in the U.S. Coast Guard, and U.S. Rep. Bill Huizenga both thanked veterans and highlighted the support system offered at GVSU between veterans.
GVSU’s Native American Advisory Council member Steven Naganashe Perry presented a feather to Haas at the breakfast, a symbol of honoring veterans.
Center for Adult and Continuing Studies expands programming into digital marketing
Grand Valley State University’s Center for Adult and Continuing Studies (CACS) announced a new digital marketing program that will include certifications in a variety of industry-recognized platforms and hands-on work with industry professionals. The program, which was piloted in the fall, will officially launch Jan. 15.
The program is a partnership with professional development company GreenFig and will feature virtual, small group and networking opportunities.
Executive Director of CACS Simone Jonaitis said that the new program reflects a demand in the industry’s focus on professionals with updated skills in a fluid, dynamic industry.
