Over the holiday break, the Grand Valley State men’s basketball team picked up two victories in Quincy, Ill. at the Subway Invitational. They beat McKendre 94-65 before defeating host school Quincy 77-73 to win the event.

With the win, the Lakers were able to go 2-0 on the weekend with Hunter Hale winning MVP honors.

GVSU men’s basketball falls to Truman State, 82-78

Before heading home for the holidays, GVSU lost a hard fought battle to Truman State on the road 82-78.

Five different Lakers scored in double figures, with Van Tubbergen and Jeremiah Ferguson each pouring in 15 points to lead the team. Van Tubbergen also led all Lakers with seven rebounds.

While the Lakers entered halftime with the Bulldogs tied at 37, a late surge by TSU was able to earn them the victory. Despite GVSU staying within a point or two in the final few minutes, they couldn’t get over the hump and gain a lead to end the game.

GVSU women’s swimming & diving claims big win over Wayne State, men fall in tight duel

The No. 11 Grand Valley State women claimed a convincing 204.5-95.5 victory over Wayne State on Saturday, Jan. 5 in the final home duel of the season, while the No. 3 men dropped a close 152-142 decision to the No. 8 Warriors.

The GVSU women won 13 of 16 events on the day, including five events in which the Lakers finished 1-2. Senior Mercedes Martinez set the pool record in the 100 butterfly, finishing first in a time of 56.91.

While the men’s team consistently finished 2-3-4 in most of their races, not earning first place in key races is what ultimately led to their downfall. Chris Kelly was able to finish first in the 1-meter board with a score of 236.62

The men and women will travel to Findlay, Ohio this weekend to take on Findlay in the pool. The races are set to start at 5 p.m.
