Grand Rapids welcomes college students to explore the city during the annual GR College Week. From Monday, Sept. 10 through Sunday, Sept. 16, the city will open its arms to all college students within the area as a week designed to get students out and about in the city of Grand Rapids.

GR College Week is not just for GVSU students; it is a joint effort between the city and all of the different colleges that are located nearby. Students from Grand Rapids Community College, Calvin College, Ferris State University and other surrounding communities are welcome to participate in the events as well.

“This was an idea that came up three years ago where the city and President Haas identified the need for students to get downtown more and engage with the city so they are more familiar with it and comfortable,” said Liz Collver, assistant director of Student Life for Civic Engagement. “We also want students to get to know the city to see that Grand Rapids is a great place to stay after college.”

GR College Week was designed to appeal to all different types of students. Each day consists of various events such as a Mixer at the Knickerbocker, a free yoga session and more.

GR College Week is a way for students to really get to know their community while having fun.

“We are part of the West Michigan community and Grand Rapids is the economic engine of West Michigan. You should know the community that you are in,” Collver said.

Students also can expect special discounts from local businesses within the city.

“Some of the discounts being offered, particularly the Downtown Market are really good. They are up to half off at some of the places!” Collver said. 

John Ball Zoo, The Bitter End Coffee House and the Grand Rapids Art Museum are just a few of the many businesses that will be offering discounts and deals throughout the week.

“This is the first year we have had city services and businesses reaching out to us on how to get involved,” Collver said. “It is just like how we have welcome week on campus, now it is welcome week in Grand Rapids.”

The week consists of food, entertainment and a chance to relax and enjoy the city of Grand Rapids. 

“There are so many discounts and so many events and partnerships…that is what you can look forward to. You can really choose your own adventure downtown,” Collver said.

Students who don’t have a ride are recommended to take route 50 on The Rapid to get downtown.
