Conference focuses on motivating women

Grand Valley State University’s You Beautiful Black Women organization is hosting its annual women’s conference on Saturday.
The workshop, titled “A Balanced Lifestyle,” features five speakers who will discuss the areas of a healthy lifestyle: spirituality, self-esteem, fitness, finances and personal life.
Angileena Gibson, YBBW’s sergeant at arms, said this conference is meant to inform women of all races and backgrounds about healthy lifestyles.
“I want them [women] to be knowledgeable about living a healthy and balanced lifestyle,” Gibson said.
Alkiesha Collins, physicians assistant at St. Clair Shore Specialty Center, will discuss fitness to the audience at the conference.
Pastor Kenneth Hoskins and his wife, Co-Pastor Sheronda Hoskins, from the Divined Grace Ministries Church in Grand Rapids will also speak at the event. Pastor Kenneth Hoskins will speak about spirituality and Co-Pastor Sheronda Hoskins will speak about personal and social life.
Motivational speaker Chris Sain will discuss emotion and self-esteem. Sain is the founder of Grand C.I.T.Y (Committed to Influencing Today’s Youth), a Grand Rapids organization created to help at risk youth by emphasizing education through sports.
Gibson said about 80 people have attended the workshop each year since it was started in 1992, and the group expects about the same amount this year.
“This [event] motivates and uplifts women,” she said.
Gibson said this event is the YBBW’s last of the year.
The club’s focus is to promote sisterhood for all women, which she said is not necessarily common in many GVSU organizations.
The speeches will be held at the Kirkhof Center in rooms 2215 and 2216 from noon to 4 p.m.
