GVSU faculty to discuss free speech at panel discussion
The Pew Faculty Teaching and Learning Center will host a panel discussion about free speech Wednesday, Sept. 20, from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the Loosemore Auditorium of the Richard M. DeVos Center.
The focus of the panel discussion, “Faculty Conversations: Freedom of Speech, Teaching and Civil Discourse,” will be free speech in the classroom and the role professors play in overseeing classroom discourse.
The event is open to the entire Grand Valley State University community.

‘It’s on Us’ to participate in RAINN Day to promote sexual assault awareness
The Grand Valley State University chapter of “It’s on Us” will participate in RAINN Day in the Kirkhof Center Lobby Thursday, Sept. 21, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.
RAINN Day is an annual occurrence dedicated to educating college students about sexual violence, risk reduction and recovery resources.

University Counseling Center to hold suicide prevention seminar
The Grand Valley State University Counseling Center will host a suicide prevention seminar Tuesday, Sept. 19, from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in Room 2270 of the Kirkhof Center.
The “Question, Persuade, Refer” (QPR) suicide prevention program will be the focus of the seminar, which is LIB 100-approved. The QPR method is designed to equip students with the knowledge and tools necessary to recognize suicide warning signs and find help for suicidal individuals.

ACES, GVPD partner to hold informational program about marijuana use
Alcohol & Other Drugs Campus Education Services (ACES) will partner once again with the Grand Valley State University Police Department to host an educational seminar about marijuana use.
“Marijuana: Truth, Lies and Consequences” will be held Tuesday, Sept. 19, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. in Room 0072 of the Kirkhof Center.
During the program, attendees will learn about the legal consequences and potential health risks associated with marijuana use. Information will also be provided for individuals who want to change their marijuana or other substance use.

Association for Women in Science to hold discussion about implicit bias
The West Michigan chapter of the Association for Women in Science will host a discussion about barriers and biases in the fields of science and medicine Wednesday, Sept. 20, from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m.
The goal of the discussion is to equip attendees with strategies to overcome these issues and have prosperous careers.
