Tickets for ‘GVSU Night at Comerica Park’ now on sale

Tickets for the “GVSU Night at Comerica Park” are now on sale for the Detroit Tigers and the Kansas City Royals game Wednesday, July 26, at 7 p.m. The event offers a time where students, faculty, staff, alumni and their family and friends can come together and celebrate the university.

Ticket can be purchased through www.gvsu.edu/tigers/ for anywhere between $26 and $49. Five dollars from each ticket sale will be donated toward supporting the Grand Valley Scholarship Fund, a general fund used to support students through scholarships.

The first 1,500 people who purchase tickets will receive a GVSU and Tigers co-branded hat.

Office of Undergraduate Research seeking volunteers for Student Scholars Day

The Office of Undergraduate Research and Scholarship is looking for people who will be able to help volunteer at the 21st annual Student Scholars Day. Those who volunteer will need to be able to fill two-hour time blocks during the event’s run time from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, April 12. Volunteers will be helping out in either Henry Hall or the Kirkhof Center with registration, greeting visitors, hosting session, and set and tear down.

Student Scholars Day is a Grand Valley State University tradition where students and their faculty mentors can show off student research and study from over the course of the year. Exhibits include oral and poster presentations, panels, discussions and various performances.

Film on discrimination in education to be shown in Kirkhof Center

Tuesday, March 14, the film “Tested” will be shown in the Grand River Room in the Kirkhof Center at 3:30 p.m. The film focuses on educational opportunities in New York, where black children and Hispanics or Latinos make up 70 percent of the city’s school-aged children but only occupy five percent of spots in the city’s most elite public schools.

The film centers on a group of students of color in the 8th grade as they work on trying to perfect the standardized tests that the schools require their students to take. The film’s writer and director, Curtis Chin, will speak after the film and take questions. The event is LIB 100/201 approved.

GV to host Denise Iwaniw for ‘Walk a Good Life’

Grand Valley State University will host Denise Iwaniw Tuesday, March 14, to discuss Native American philosophies on community, citizenship, ecology and identity to learn about “walking a good life.” The event will take place in Classroom 614 of the L.V. Eberhard Center from 2:30 p.m. to 3:45 p.m.

Iwaniw is the founder and president of Gathering Thunder Foundation, which is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving Native American traditions and culture, mitigating poverty and promoting Native American health and wellness.
