Swimming notches pair of wins

Coming off losses to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee last weekend, the Grand Valley State University swimming and diving teams rebounded in their first home meet on Friday, defeating Lewis University.

The women dominated Lewis throughout the day, winning every event and finishing the day with a 198-37 victory. Senior Carly Bush led the way with wins in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10 minutes, 25.98 seconds), 100-yard butterfly (59.61) and 500-yard freestyle (5:14.31).

Not to be outdone by their female counterparts, the men’s team put together a strong showing of their own, winning 11 of the 13 events against Lewis. Three Lakers won multiple events for the men, including Aaron Beebe (400-yard IM and 100-yard butterfly), Michael Griffith (50-yard freestyle and 100-yard freestyle) and Paul Swedenborg (1- and 3-meter diving).

Adding to their success this weekend, Beebe and Bush were rewarded for the efforts last weekend, as both were named GLIAC Men’s and Women’s Swimming & Diving Athletes of the Week.

Ebels ties 14-year Division II record

History was matched in the Grand Valley State University volleyball team’s win over Michigan Technological University on Friday after sophomore outside hitter Abby Ebels hit her way into the NCAA record books.

Ebels matched an NCAA Division II record by recording 13 kills on 13 attempts in the match, tying a 1997 record by Kim Merrill from University of South Carolina-Aiken.

Ebels finished with five of her kills in the final set, and is fifth on the Lakers team in kills with 89.

The three-game sweep of Michigan Tech helped the Lakers snap a three-match losing streak.
