This weekend, the Grand Valley State University men’s golf team opened its 2013 fall season as it competed against the likes of Drury University, University of Indianapolis and Northwood University.

“We were all really excited to get out there this weekend,” sophomore Tyler Polulak said. “We’ve
been working for this all summer; it’s a great feeling to get the season started.”

The Meadows Golf Course played host for the Arendsen Invitational, as the Lakers had the privilege
of starting their 2013 season on their home turf.

“Its always nice to get started out at home,” senior Derek Berribeau said. “We’re obviously
extremely comfortable here, we know where to put the ball. It’s all about going out there and
executing.”

GVSU sat at third place after the first 18 holes with a score of 308, while Indianapolis and
Northwood both sat atop of the leaderboard with scores of 302, respectively.

“The weather definitely played a big factor this morning,” Polulak said. “Once we got warmed up,
we knew our scores would also improve. It was just a matter of playing things out.”

Through the first 18 holes, redshirt junior Jack Rider led all scores with a first round performance
of 74. Joel Seigel and Tyler Polulak both managed to tally in a score of 77 while senior leader Chris
Cunningham got off to a slow start with a team high score of 82.

“Cunningham, myself and (Jack) Rider are going to carry this team a lot this year, and we really
need to have better performances for us to be successful,” senior Joel Seigel said. “However, it was
the first match of the season and we will learn from it.”

GVSU went on to finish second overall (603), as Indianapolis took home the hardware with a total
team score of 594. Northwood finished third with a total team score of 610, and Drury rounded out
the tournament with a total team score of 614.

“I don’t think any of us really played to well,” Seigel said. “It’s going to be a long season and we
have a lot of work to do in the meantime.”

One bright spot for the Lakers was Berribeau’s performance, as he took home the individual
championship with a total score of 144. Berribeau’s second round score of 69 (-3) is what
ultimately led him to the top spot of the leaderboard.

“It felt really good to start the season off on such a high note,” Berribeau said. “I felt like I had
everything going today, especially my puts. Hopefully I can carry this momentum with me into our
next match.”

Although the Lakers may have fallen short on the opening weekend of the 2013 fall season, they
will soon have another shot at beating the University of Indianapolis when they head down to Indy for the University of Indianapolis Invitational at the Brickyard Crossing Golf Course on Sept. 16.
