GVSU women’s golf wins NC4K College Classic, Katie Chipman places first individually

During a road trip to Columbus, Ohio, the Grand Valley State women’s golf team finished in first place at the NC4K College Classic with a two-day total of 599 on Monday, April 9, and Tuesday, April 10. The Lakers took a five-stroke victory over second-place Northern Michigan, which shot a 604. 

Leading the charge for GVSU was sophomore Katie Chipman, who took home the individual title after posting rounds of 71 and 72 for a total of 143 (-1) in the two-day tournament to win by just one stroke over Avery Rochester of Northern Michigan. On Wednesday, April 11, Chipman was awarded GLIAC Women’s Golfer of the Week for her effort at the event.

Mackenzie Blomberg moved up from 14th place after the first round to a tie for 4th with rounds of 78 and 73 (151, +7). Samantha Moss and Olivia Reed weren’t far behind their teammates as the duo tied for 7th place after shooting rounds of 80 and 73, and 76 and 77, respectively, to both finish at 153 (+9). Maria Sol Pose moved up four spots from 20th to a tie for 16th after shooting a 156 (+12) with rounds of 80 and 76.

The Lakers will have just a few days off before heading down to Ashland, Ohio, on Saturday, April 14, to Sunday, April 15, for the Ashland Invitational. That will be the last tournament for GVSU before the GLIAC Championships from Friday, April 20, through Sunday, April 22, down in Nashport, Ohio.

GVSU women’s hockey to hold moment of silence for Humboldt bus victims

In light of the recent tragedy for the Humboldt Broncos—a junior hockey team from Saskatchewan—Grand Valley State will be holding a moment of silence at the GVSU Cook Carillon Tower Thursday, April 12, at 7 p.m.

The team is asking attendees to wear a jersey, or the colors green and gold, to show support for the 15 deceased members of the hockey team who lost their lives after the team bus collided with a transport truck on the highway before a playoff game Friday, April 6. There are still 14 members of the team in critical condition.

The team asks those who attend to bring flowers and candles to the event. 

GVSU lacrosse falls to No. 2 Lindenwood 15-13

During a road trip to St. Charles, Missouri, the No. 13 Grand Valley State Lakers fell to the No. 2 Lindenwood Lions, 15-13, in non-conference action on Monday, April 9. 

GVSU rallied for three goals late in the second half, but the comeback ran out of time and the Lakers saw their eight-match win streak snapped. GVSU falls to 9-3 on the year, while Lindenwood moves to 13-0 on the season.

GVSU goalie Brianna DeMilia broke the single-game save record for GVSU, stopping 19 shots on Monday to keep the Lakers close. Meghan Datema and Abbi O’Neal led the way offensively with three goals each, while Carly Shisler caged a pair to go along with an assist.

The Lakers return to GLIAC action Friday, April 13, on the road at No. 15 Indianapolis at 7 p.m. The Lakers look for the regular-season sweep after beating the Greyhounds two weeks ago in Allendale. GVSULakers.com and @GVSUWLAX on Twitter will have live coverage of the matchup.
