World famous horses come to Van Andel Arena
Jan 24, 2011
on their 41st anniversary tour across the country.
Located in Oviedo, Fla., the “World Famous” Lipizzaner stallions, originally trained as war horses, perform ballets and “Airs Above the Ground” tricks that takes years of training, according to Lipizzaner.com.
Some of these tricks include the Courbette, where the horse balances on its hind legs and then jumps, keeping the hind legs together and the forelegs off the ground, and the Capriole, where the horse leaps into the air and draws its forelegs under its chest and at the height of elevation, kicks out with his hind legs.
“These were movements originally taught on the battlefield,” Attendees to the event can expect to learn the history and background of the stallions as well as becoming educated on the art of dressage and harmony between horse and rider. Thompson said the Lipizzaner stallions are originally born brown or black but then turn white over a six to 10 year period.
“All people, young and old, enjoy the beauty and grace these rare stallions provide, which even non-horse enthusiasts can appreciate,” he said.
