GVSU Athletics releases ‘Laker Legends’ Fathead promotion
Grand Valley State Athletics announced a new game day promotion to honor past Lakers who excelled on the field with the GVSU “Laker Legends” promotion, in conjunction with Fathead.
The collectable set will include legends from GVSU women’s soccer, football, volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, and women’s lacrosse. The collectables will be given away to fans during selected games for that specific sport.
The Fatheads are 5-by-7 self-adhesive decals. The Laker legends on those decals will be selected through Twitter polls on the GVSU Lakers account. The poll will be open for 48 hours to select the legend.
The first program to vote on Laker legends will be GVSU women’s soccer, which will provide Fatheads to the first 500 fans who attend the Florida Tech game Wednesday, Oct. 11, at 7 p.m.
GVSU club rowing has eventful Family Weekend
As one of the oldest clubs at Grand Valley State, the club rowing team prides itself on its rich history and alumni since the program started in 1964.
In light of GVSU’s Family Weekend, the club hosted its own version of Family Weekend with an open boathouse learn-to-row event Saturday, Sept. 23.
The event provided an opportunity for family members of novice and varsity rowers, as well as alumni, to give rowing a try. Led by the team captains, there was a learn-to-row seminar for those interested in participating.
The team also showcased their alumni by inviting the eight-member crew from 1997, the only GVSU men’s varsity eight crew to medal at the Dad Vail Regatta, to race against GVSU’s current varsity men’s eight Sunday, Sept. 24.
The 1997 team finished the Dad Vail in third place with a time of 6:09.73. The only schools that finished ahead were first-place Temple University (5:59.05) and second-place Florida Tech (6:04.83).
GVSU rifle club competes in Illinois State Championship
The Grand Valley State rifle club sent three students to compete in the Illinois State Rifle Association (ISRA) Metric Prone Championship and Conventional Prone Championship at the ISRA Range Saturday, Sept. 9, through Sunday, 10.
Each championship consisted of 160 shots fired from the prone position at various distances. The event marked the first time the Lakers had a shot match in Illinois.
Sophomore Ethan Potts shot a score of 1,441 (out of 1,600) in the metric match and 1,528 (out of 1,600) in the conventional match, enough to place 17th and 20th overall. Teammate Alexander Straith finished 22nd overall in both matches, posting scores of 1,317 (metric) and 1,518 (conventional).
Rounding out the scoring for the Lakers was senior David Cantillon, who scored 1,390 for a 21st finish in the metric match and 1,531 in the conventional match for 19th overall.
The Lakers will be competing in the September Orion Scoring System Virtual Matches. The date and time has yet to be announced on the club’s page on www.gvsuclubsports.com.
