Laker Effect Challenge reception taking place

Grand Valley State University will recognize the winners of the spring 2018 Laker Effect Challenge on Thursday, April 12.

The reception will take place from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Eberhard Center, located on GVSU’s Pew Campus. Six teams consisting of students, staff and faculty members will present their ideas and pitches. Competitors will pitch ideas that have significant impact on the West Michigan community.

The teams will compete for up to $5,000 in prize money. Last December, three teams won the combined prize. 

Holocaust memorial march taking place on campus

Grand Valley State University fraternity Alpha Epsilon Pi will lead a march to commemorate those killed in the Holocaust. The march, titled “We Walk to Remember,” will take place on Sunday, April 15, at 4 p.m. 

The march will begin at Lake Michigan Hall, commence through campus and complete at the Cook Carillon Tower. A few members of the fraternity will speak at the event. 

Morgan Mattler, president of GVSU’s AEPhi chapter, said via email, “We feel very strongly about this event and think it is definitely something that the GVSU community should know about, as a mass genocide must never happen again.”

Lecture on American marriage taking place

The Grand Valley State University sociology department will host a lecture on the cultural dynamics of marriage in the U.S.

The event, titled “Cultural Logics of American Marriage: Paths of Lesser and Greater Resistance,” will take place on Friday, April 13, from 1 p.m. to 2:15 p.m. in Room 1101 of the P. Douglas Kindschi Hall of Science. The lecture will be led by Alison Moss. Moss will speak about the dynamics of current American marriage culture, focusing in on how the current battle for marriage equality affect marriage. 

The event is both LIB 100- and 201-approved.

SASC holding final exam prep. workshop

Grand Valley State University’s Student Academic Success Center will hold a final exam preparation planning session on Thursday, April 12. The workshop will take place in Kirkhof Center Room 1104 from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Those who choose to attend can expect to learn test-taking strategies as well as strategies on dealing with stress. 

Gradfest taking place next week

Upcoming Grand Valley State University graduates should know that GradFest is taking place from Monday, April 16, through Thursday, April 19. 

Monday and Tuesday’s sessions will take place on GVSU’s Allendale Campus from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in Kirkhof Center Room 2250 (Grand River Room). On Wednesday, GradFest will take place from the same times in the DeVos Center’s Hager-Lubbers Exhibition Hall, located on GVSU’s Pew Campus. Graduation candidates will have the opportunity to purchase their caps and gowns as well as take photos in their ceremonial wear.
