Grand Valley State University’s Student Senate, while still maintaining focus on it’s prevailing mission of wider student representation, has also begun to plan events for the upcoming school year.

Senate’s constitutional task force, created to update its current constitution and propose changes, including the area of student representation, has begun strategic planning for both the current academic year and deep into the future.

The senators have also begun meetings to plan Presidents’ Ball. The event this year will be a ‘50s theme.

“There’s a lot of progress being made, and I think we’re in a good spot,” said Tendo Lukwago, senate executive vice president.

The Student Senate office will also have a suggestion box so that students can submit names for a Presidents’ Ball slogan. The winner will receieve two free tickets to the event.

Another event senate is planning is the Last Lecture, which will take place Nov. 29. The speaker at the lecture will be Brian Riemersma, a newer professor at GVSU, according to Katie Carlson, vice president of the educational affairs committee.

“We wanted to tell him ‘you’re doing something right, and we appreciate what you’re doing,’” Carlson said.

Senate is planning to have guest speakers come in to its meetings in the next weeks to update the senators about university happenings while the committees continue work on other resolutions that will be presented to the general assembly in the near future.

The Student Senate body will continue to work on organizing events, they said, in an effort to engage both the faculty and all students of different backgrounds throughout the school year.
