News Briefs: Student Scholars Day this Wednesday

Poetry on The Rapid
Poetry from Grand Valley State University faculty as well as Calvin College and Grand Rapids Community College will be put on display on The Rapid bus system for passenger pleasure as part of the Poetry on The Rapid program.
GVSU faculty who will be featured on The Rapid include Patricia Clark, Chris Haven, Amorak Huey and Todd Kaneko. Each bus system will feature six poems placed on placards designed by Vinicius Lima, assistant professor of graphic design at GVSU.
Passengers can look out for the poetry all through the month of April in celebration of National Poetry Month.

AMA board members celebrated with national awards
The 37th International Collegiate American Marketing Association Conference honored Grand Valley State University AMA board members with several awards the weekend of March 20.
A total of seven student board members were celebrated with awards in areas such as membership, communications and fundraising. The conference, which took place in New Orleans, also featured break-out workshops, keynote speakers as well as several chances for students to better their skills in marketing.

Student Scholars Day
The 20th annual Student Scholars Day is set to take place on Wednesday, April 8 with over 350 presenters in attendance.
Presenters and faculty mentors will host presentations in oral, poster and panel formats from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Kirkhof Center, Henry Hall and the Mary Idema Pew Library.
In addition to the presentations, films and live performances will also take place in the library’s Multipurpose Room from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., along with an art exhibition in the exhibition space throughout the whole day.
Keynote speaker Brian Fagan is an emeritus professor of anthropology at the University of California at Santa Barbara as well as the best-selling author of “The Great Warming: Climate Change and the Rise and Fall of Civilizations.” Fagan’s presentation will take place at 7 p.m. in Pere Marquette Room at the Kirkhof Center.

Design Thinking for Social Impact
As a part of West Michigan Design Week, Grand Valley State University will put together a panel of local business leaders to discuss design thinking and complex problem solving in an open event on April 7.
Panelists include Ellen Carpenter, vice president of marketing and communications for Heart of West Michigan United Way; Ryan Kilpatrick, community assistance specialist at Michigan Economic Development Corporation; and Kris Spaulding, sustainability director and owner at Brewery Vivant.
“Design Thinking for Social Impact” is sponsored by GVSU, the Grand Rapids Art Museum and AIGA West Michigan Design for Good. The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, April 7 in Room 1008 of the L. William Seidman Center.
