Gas leak leads to evacuation of Kirkhof Center, Mary Idema Pew Library

Grand Valley State University’s Kirkhof Center and Mary Idema Pew Library Learning and Information Commons are back open after being evacuated Tuesday morning due to a gas leak.

The buildings were evacuated after an irrigation company struck the main gas line around 8:45 a.m., July 9.

Allendale Fire Department, GVSU Public Safety, Facilities Services staff and contract staff from Pioneer Construction helped to establish a perimeter around the area.

“As a safety precaution, both the new library and Kirkhof Center were evacuated until a repair could be completed,” said Tim Thimmesch, associate vice president of Facilities Services. “DTE (Energy) responded to the call and had the leak repaired and buildings back in service by 9:45 a.m.”
