Oct 2, 2011
The third time proved to be a charm for the Grand Valley State University football team as they snapped a three-game losing streak Saturday in a 70-7 victory over Tiffin University in front of 9,173 fans.
Offensively, the Lakers (2-3, 1-3 GLIAC) busted out of the gates, taking a 21-0 lead in the first quarter. The 21-point spread was the team’s biggest lead since their season-opening 44-20 victory over Western Oregon University.
Three touchdowns from sophomore quarterback Heath Parling – including a 27-yard touchdown run – put GVSU in the driver’s seat early.
Tiffin (0-5, 0-4 GLIAC) tried to mix the running game into their pass-heavy offense early on, but the Lakers defense put pressure on the quarterback – four sacks- and held the running game in check – 92 yards.
GVSU used a variety of long plays – highlighted by three passing plays of 38 yards in the second half – to put together their best half, and game, of the season. Parling finished the game with 298 yards to go with five touchdowns, while junior receiver Charles Johnson grabbed eight passes for 158 yards and two touchdowns.
The running game continued its recent roll, as the duo of Norman Shuford and Hersey Jackson combined to rush for 93 yards in the first half. Jackson in particular continued his hot streak, carrying for 89 yards.
Defensively, the Lakers were led by senior Brad Thomas and the rest of the line backing group. The trio of Howard, and sophomores Luther Ware and Reggie Williams recorded 16 total tackles, and handled the Tiffin running and passing games.
The defense held the Dragons to only 218 total yards to go with four sacks.
Coming off their first win in a month, the Lakers will return to practice this week before going on the road to Marquette, Mich. to take on Northern Michigan University on Saturday.
