Senior Mitchell White named GLIAC Golfer of the Week

While the Grand Valley State men’s golf team did well at the Doc Spragg Invitational, one performance really stood out, as Mitchell White earned the esteemed award of GLIAC Golfer of the Week this past week. White is the first Laker golfer to earn the honor this season

Mitchell earned this honor after winning the Invitational hosted by Findlay University, his second collegiate victory in his successful career. After the tournament was cut short after day one due to weather, White had the best score of all 90 golfers in the invitational, shooting a three-under, 141 after two rounds of 72 and 69.

White’s efforts also helped the GVSU team earn a first-place tie with Indianapolis, as the two teams carded two-under, 574’s to lead the 18-team event. The Lakers return to the course in two weeks, as they look to do more of the same in the Detroit Mercy Invite on Monday, Oct. 15.

Quarterback Bart Williams named student-athlete of the week

The accolades never seem to stop coming for quarterback Bart Williams, as he earned the GVSU Student-Athlete of the Week award presented by Ruth’s Chris Steak House this past week. Williams joins linebacker Tyler Bradfield and punter Collin Cribley as the only football players to win the award so far this season.

Williams has totaled 1,167 yards and 14 touchdowns in five games this season, and looks to improve upon those numbers in this week’s homecoming match-up with Dixie State. Kickoff at Lubbers Stadium is set for 7 p.m.

GVSU Women’s tennis bests Purdue Northwest, 7-0

The Grand Valley State women’s tennis team won its third consecutive match Sunday afternoon, as they topped Purdue Northwest 7-0 to improve to a 3-0 overall record on the season.

The Lakers were able to sweep the Pride in doubles play, after they won all three matches to claim the first point of the match. Marily Canellopoulos and Vera Griva claimed victory from the No. 1 spot, while Madison Ballard and Nicole Heiniger were able to dominate in the No. 2 spot. The duo of Livia Christman and Liv Hanover got a commanding win from the No. 3 spot.

GVSU also dominated in singles action, as they only dropped 11 total games throughout the six matches. Ballard and Griva claimed wins from the No. 1 singles and No. 2 singles spots, respectively.
