Beethoven concert to open Fall Arts celebration
Sep 9, 2012
The annual Fall Arts celebration will open up this year with a performance by Grand Valley State University faculty, students and guest artists singing “Music for the ‘Era of Good Feelings’: Beethoven in Federalist America.” The performance is set for Sept. 10 at 8 p.m. The music department is celebrating the bicentennial of this new age of peace with the performance. They will be performing three pieces by Ludwig Van Beethoven: “The Ruins of Athens,” Opus 113, written in 1811-12; “Christ on the Mount of Olives,” with its rousing final “Hallelujah” chorus; and “Wellington’s Victory,” composed in 1813. These pieces represent the freedom and liberty values wanted so badly by the republic at that time. All six of the events planned for the Fall Arts celebration are free and open to the public.
