Canepa, Wolters earn honorable-mention laurels
As the Grand Valley State volleyball team gears up for an NCAA Elite Eight appearance in Louisville, Ky., two of its number were recognized with similar awards. Seniors Christina Canepa and Kaitlyn Wolters earned All-America Honorable Mentions from different organizations.
Canepa, a libero, was voted as a Daktronics, Inc. All-America Honorable Mention, while Wolters, a setter, garnered an American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Honorable Mention. Both players also received All-GLIAC First Team, Daktronics Midwest Region First Team and Midwest Region All-Tournament Team selections earlier in the season.
Wolters is the first Laker to receive All-America honors in back-to-back seasons since Rebeccah Rapin in 2009-10.
Soccer leads DII in Daktronics, Inc. All-America picks
Four Grand Valley State women’s soccer players were named to the 2014 Daktronics/Division II Conference Commissioners Association All-America Team. Senior defender Juane Odendaal and sophomore midfielder Marti Corby garnered first-team honors. Freshman forward Gabriella Mencotti was named to the second-team, while senior forward Jenny Shaba earned an honorable mention. With four honorees, GVSU leads the nation.
The plaudit was Corby’s second consecutive selection to the Daktronics All-America First Team, while Odendaal earned the award for the first time in her career. Mencotti became just the second freshman in school history to earn All-American honors, posting 42 points in 2014 – first among all Division II freshmen.
Men’s golf team adds three recruits for 2015-16
The Grand Valley State men’s golf team recently added three new prospects for the 2015-16 season. Head coach Gary Bissell announced the signing of Bryce Messner, Alexander Scott and Mitchell White.
Messner, a senior from Hartland, was an All-State First Team golfer, earning a spot at the 2014 MHSAA Division 1 Championship as an individual.
Scott, another 2014 All-State member, won four tournaments and posted a 74.0 scoring average in his junior year at Traverse City West.
White, a Muskegon native, is a three-time All-Ottawa-Kent Conference Black Division honoree for Mona Shores High School, earning the OK Black individual scoring title and an individual regional championship.
