Freshman Panning named GLIAC Athlete of the Week
Grand Valley State redshirt freshman runner Zach Panning was named the GLIAC Male Cross Country Athlete of the Week. Panning finished in 19th place at the Greater Louisville Classic last Saturday. His time of 25:25.8 helped the Lakers finish ninth overall in a field stocked with top Division I opponents. GVSU finished first among Division II teams at the event. Panning’s time was among the fastest recorded times for a freshman on a certified 8k course in GVSU history. He also finished in first place overall at the Conference Crossover meet last weekend, although his finish did not count towards his GLIAC award.
Lakers set for Bing Beall Classic
The Grand Valley State women’s golf team will look to build of a dominant performance at the Dan Salisbury Memorial Event as it travels to Findlay, Ohio to compete in the Bing Beall Classic on Sunday and Monday. 17 teams, including a number of GLIAC schools, will compete in the tournament hosted by Findlay. Play begins at the Findlay Country Club Golf Course on Sunday morning with tee times at noon and will continue through Monday.
Division II club hockey sweeps showcase
The Division II Grand Valley State men’s hockey club dominated the competition at the ACHA Division II showcase hosted by Lindenwood University. The Lakers (7-0) steamrolled Dayton in the opening game of the tournament to the tune of a 9-2 score. GVSU then edged Florida Gulf Coast in the second game with a 3-2 win. The Lakers capped off a perfect tournament with a decisive 3-0 win over Southern Illinois — Edwardsville. GVSU will return to home ice on Oct. 16 with a tilt against Bowling Green at Georgetown Ice Center at 8 p.m.
