On Saturday, senior attack Victoria Devine and the Grand Valley State lacrosse team showcased their offensive firepower in a hurry at Walsh in North Canton, Ohio.

Devine scored the fastest first goal in GVSU history, finding the back of the net just 11 seconds into the game. The initial strike broke the previous mark by more than a second. From there, the Lakers went on an offensive tear, scoring 16 unanswered on their way to a 16-1 win.

“It was great to see the teamwork and the effort of the team,” said coach Alicia Groveston. “We scored 16 goals on the day and 13 of the goals were scored by different players, and it was also really nice to see the unselfish play by the team.

“We were able to give ourselves second-chance shots and we capitalized on our opportunities.”

The Lakers (7-4, 2-0 GLIAC) led 11-0 at halftime, and continued their offensive assault early in the second stanza when sophomore midfielder Ryan Skomial completed her hat trick at the 26:41 mark.

“A game like this gives our team lots of confidence,” Groveston said. “We had lots of people play lots of minutes and perform very well, which will help them gain a confidence boost going on through the rest of the season.”

Walsh freshman Sarah McCormick, one of 11 underclassmen on the 17-member Cavalier roster, spoiled a shutout for GVSU goalie Sarah Zwilsky with 32 seconds remaining. For Zwilsky and the Laker defense, the tally snapped a scoreless streak that spanned 137 minutes and 32 seconds – more than two games. The sophomore keeper made one save on the day, earning her seventh win of the season.

Skomial led the Lakers offensively with her three-goal night. She also had a game-high three draw controls.

Senior attack Zoe Stiemann finished with a three-point night as well (two goals, one assist), as did senior captain Sarah Lowe (one goal, two assists). Sophomore mid Kira Dosenberry had two assists.

The Lakers finished with a lopsided edge in shots (27-3) and draw controls (15-4) while leading in ground balls (22-15) and turnovers (19-13).

“We did a really great job today, and it was a great team win moving forward,” said senior mid Brooke Ingraham, who recorded an eight-point night (five goals, three assists) on Wednesday at Wheeling Jesuit. “We had lots of people play and score. It shows how much depth we have as a team.

“We showed great teamwork and fed off each other’s confidence and energy.”

The victory was the fourth in as many games for the Lakers.

The team also notched a pair of big wins in West Virginia this week at WJU (21-6) and Alderson Broaddus (17-0). The shutout at A-B was the fourth in GVSU history and the first since April 2014.

The Lakers head back to Ohio for a GLIAC game at Ursuline before returning to Allendale for a four-game homestand.
