Finding fun fall activities in West Michigan
Oct 31, 2016
As October comes to a close, the fall season has brought in beautiful and colorful leaves, cooler temperatures and a plethora of autumn activities to do. Grand Valley State University Lakers have the great opportunity to be in the heart of West Michigan with the great scenery it provides. Before the snow hits the ground, be sure to find some fun fall things to do like going out to corn mazes or going to a haunted house or picking a giant pumpkin to carve.
Here are some must-visit corn mazes, hayrides, U-pick pumpkins, haunted attractions and more for your and your friends to visit in the greater Grand Rapids area:
1: Robinette’s Apple Haus and Winery
3142 4 Mile Rd. NE Grand Rapids, Michigan 49525
Every fall, Robinette’s rolls out a new Charlie Brown-inspired design for its 6.5-acre corn maze. In addition to being able to walk around the maze, visitors can also enjoy cinnamon and sugar donuts while walking around picking their own apples off of the hundreds of trees. For those who are over 21, they can visit the winery for wine tasting. Robinette’s does offer those not of legal-drinking age cider to drink on location and to buy to take home and enjoy.
2: Fruit Ridge Hayrides and Fall Fun
11966 Fruit Ridge Ave. Kent City, Michigan 49330
They tout themselves as having the most advanced and challenging corn maze in West Michigan, most likely due to its size. Spanning 10 acres, the giant corn maze offers interactive games throughout while visitors try to make their way through the maze. The design changes every year, this year’s theme was “Let Freedom Ring” which allowed maze-goers to learn the history of the U.S. while making their way through the corn stalks. They also offer “U-pick” pumpkins and apples.
3: Witches of New Salem
4516 24th St. Dorr, Michigan 49323
For those who love a little fright in their corn mazes, the New Salem Corn Maze is the place to go. Located in Dorr, Michigan, the corn maze is haunted by what they call “corn stalkers” who will follow those brave enough to enter the maze. According to their website, the maze will leave you “out of breath as you crawl, walk or run your way through the twist and turns as you try to escape the crazy atmosphere.” They also offer a “zombie hunt” and provide visitors with paintball guns to fend off the zombies.
4: The Haunt
2070 Waldorf St. NW No. 2 Grand Rapids, Michigan 49544
While this isn’t a corn maze, it has over 20,000 square feet of haunted hallways and outdoor attractions crawling with terrifying creatures waiting to scare you and your friends. The Haunt has been named one of Grand Rapids’ premiere Halloween spots to visit for many years.
Courtney Allen, GVSU freshman, has been to The Haunt for the past three years and said the outdoor maze part is scary.
“If there’s people in your group who (say your name), all the people chasing you yell your name (with) a chainsaw,” she said. Although she didn’t go this year, she said she would definitely go again.
5: Bethke Farms
12124 136th Ave. Grand Haven, Michigan 49417
Bethke Farms offers a multitude of fun activities for everyone to enjoy. They have a 3.5-acre corn maze and also offer a hayride. There is also a selection of over 1,000 pumpkins to pick from.
