The Findlay Oilers were no match for the Grand Valley State swim and dive team Saturday, Jan. 14.

The men claimed the win 150-79, while the women won 139-97.

The Lakers’ biggest fear of the meet was the availability of the facilities. Findlay does not have the most up-to-date facility.

“We did the best with what we had,” said GVSU coach Andy Boyce.

Men’s captain, and GVSU star Danny Abbott also attested to the less than adequate pool.

“Everyone did well,” Abbott said. “It was a tougher pool, and everyone did a pretty good job of adjusting to it.”

Regardless, the Laker swimmers and divers did what they are accustomed to, and stuck to their routine as best they could.

However, most of the swimmers did not swim events they normally swim. For example, Abbott swam in the 200-yard freestyle. He still touched in first place in just 1:45.60, but it isn’t a usual event for him.

Abbott also finished second in the 200 medley relay as part of the GVSU B-team with a time of 1:36.83.

Abbott was content with the day he had in the pool.

“I did a few events I don’t usually swim,” Abbott said. “I still feel like I did well, though.”

For the women, Emily Gallagher finished with two second place finishes in the 200 medley relay as part of the GVSU A-team, and also in the 200 butterfly. In the 200 medley relay her team finished with a time of 1:50.38, and in the 200 butterfly she finished with a time of 2:13.19.

In her first meet back since November due to sickness, Jennifer Priebe took first in the 100 freestyle with a final time of 54.30.

“I was happy with how I swam,” Priebe said. “I had mono, and I haven’t competed since November, so this being my first meet back I think I swam well. It was a good meet collectively as a whole. Everyone gave their best effort.”

For the men, sophomore Ben Walling had another solid meet, logging two first place finishes. He finished first in the 200 medley relay as part of the GVSU A-team with a final time of 1:35.59. He also finished first in the 200 backstroke with a final time of 1:55.72.

As for the divers, GVSU’s Brad Dalrymple was not in the lineup for Saturday’s meet. Instead, Jared Gregory stepped up and took first in the 3-meter diving with a score of 233.48.

Kayle Marquardt was able to win both the 3-meter and the 1-meter dive. In the 3-meter, she finished with a score of 194.47, which was just about 2 points higher than teammate Mikayla Karasek who finished with a 192.08. In the 1-meter dive, Marquardt finished with a score of 218.24.

The next challenge for the Lakers will be the University of Indianapolis—A team that is one of the best Division II swim and dive teams in the country. The contest will take place Saturday, Jan. 21 in the GVSU Fieldhouse Pool at 1 pm.
