Lakers sail past Findlay on Senior Day
Jan 26, 2015
Members of the Grand Valley State swimming and diving program wanted to send their senior swimmers off with a big performance, and that’s exactly what they did against Findlay.
Both GVSU teams notched convincing victories over the Oilers in the GVSU pool on Saturday afternoon, as the Laker women claimed a 196-88 win while the men earned a 225-56 victory.
GVSU coach Andy Boyce said it was great seeing his team break pool records left and right in their last regular-season home meet.
“It was really nice to see the pool records fall,” Boyce said. “The spirit of the team is really up, everyone was swimming fast and diving well. That’s what we like to see on Senior Day, to send the seniors out with a bang.”
The GVSU women won 13 events; the GVSU men won 15 events. The teams will be off until February 11-14, when the GLIAC Championships take place at the Jenison Aquatic Center.
Senior Sarah Roeser finished her last home meet with two individual pool records, winning both the 50 free with a time of 23.73 and the 100 free with a time of 51.88.
“It was a great way to end my dual-meet career,” Roeser said. “I’m sad that my time on this team is coming to an end. This is the best group of girls I’ve had the pleasure of calling my teammates and I will really miss them.
“The girls had some fantastic swims today and it shows how ready we are for our end-of-season meets. I think it will be one of our fastest conference meets ever.”
Olivia Schultz, also a senior, added another pool record for the GVSU women with a time of 2:05:24 in the 200 back. The team’s 800 free relay team also set a pool record with a time of 7:44:62.
Another senior swimmer who had a great day was Milan Medo, who won the 100 breaststroke and 100 free. Medo said he was feeling nostalgic before the meet, but it really pumped him up and got him ready.
“It felt like every other dual meet, but when they were announcing my name for senior awards, it hit me,” Medo said. “We are just starting to rest for the conference meet and we did exceptionally well today. I am really excited to see how fast this team will swim.”
Sophomore Gianni Ferrero broke a pool record on the men’s side with a victory in the 100 fly (48:14).
The Laker divers will compete in one more home event before the conference championships, the GVSU Diving Invite, which takes place at the GVSU pool on Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
