GVSU falls to UC San Diego in NCAA semifinal match
Nov 30, 2012
AUGUSTA — The Grand Valley State University soccer team could not overcome a slow start, dropping its NCAA Division II women’s soccer semifinal match against the University of California, San Diego 2-1 on Thursday.
Senior Ashley Botts added the only goal of the game for GVSU, while fellow senior, goalkeeper Chelsea Parise, allowed a pair of goals — but rode out a hailstorm of UC San Diego shots in the first half.
UC San Diego struck twice in the second half, once on a floating goal by sophomore midfielder Cassie Callahan that soared over an unsure Parise and a second off a Callahan deflection by Izzy Pozurama.
Though the Lakers put together a frenzied final push, the team could not overcome the early deficit.
The loss marks the first time in five seasons that GVSU finishes the season outside of the national championship game.
