GVSU falls short in GLIAC Tournament

The third-seeded Grand Valley State University women’s tennis team (12-2) notched an upset victory over Northwood University in the semifinals of the GLIAC Women’s Tennis Tournament on Saturday.

The Lakers held a slim, one-point lead following doubles play, and a dominating performance in the singles flight propelled GVSU to victory.

GVSU matched up against top-seeded Wayne State University for the championship on Sunday, only to fall in a tight 5-4 match. The No. 4 singles contest decided the championship, where GVSU’s freshman Allie Sweeney fell 6-4 in the final set of her matchup to WSU’s Anne Li Briand.

Lakers, Bulldogs set for first-place bout

After an impressive weekend against Northern Michigan University and Michigan Technological University, the Grand Valley State University volleyball team readies for a significant showdown at No. 22 Ferris State University on Tuesday.

The No. 13 Lakers (17-3, 13-0 GLIAC) stand alone atop the GLIAC standings, but the Bulldogs (15-5, 12-1 GLIAC) are nipping at their heels. Ferris State, which is 6-0 at the Ewigleben Sports Arena in 2014, also defeated Northern Michigan and Michigan Tech with consecutive sweeps over the weekend.

The Bulldogs are 6-0 at the Ewigleben Sports Arena in 2014.

Beat Cancer, Wear Blue and Button Up

The Wear Blue and Button Up Fundraiser is underway.

GVSU Athletics is running the fundraiser to support the American Cancer Society. The Lakers will be selling $3 “Beat Cancer” buttons at Saturday’s game against Ashland University. The proceeds from button sales will go to the American Cancer Society.
