GVSU men’s tennis splits weekend series 

The Grand Valley State men’s tennis squad split their weekend matches, defeating the Ashland Eagles 4-3 on Friday, April 5, before losing to Wayne State 6-1 on Saturday, April 6.

In the Ashland match, GVSU was able to claim victory due to the No. 1 doubles team of Sebastien Lescoulie and D.J. Colantone winning 6-3, as well as claiming victories in singles from Lescoulie (No. 1 spot), Jack Dausman (No. 3), Martin Matov (No. 4), and Nicholas Urban (No. 5).

The Lakers weren’t as lucky in Saturday’s match against Wayne State, as they took the 6-1 loss. The No. 3 pairing of Dausman and Urban were able to claim victory, while Matov was the only Laker that was able to score points in singles in his win from the No. 4 spot.

GVSU tennis now sits at 14-6, and will have their final home meet of the 2019 season, as they welcome Purdue Northwest on Sunday, April 14.

GVSU women’s tennis holds off Indiana (PA) 6-1 on Saturday

The Grand Valley State women’s tennis team defeated Indiana (PA) 6-1 on Saturday, April 6 to improve to 20-4 on the season. The win marked the 15th straight season that the Lakers have won at least 20 or more matches in a season.

GVSU was able to start the match with a sweep in doubles, as Madison Ballard and Marija Leko won from the No. 1 pairing, Vera Griva and Marily Canellopoulos earned victory from the No. 2 spot, and Nicole Heiniger and Livia Christman completed the sweep from the No. 3 doubles.

GVSU continued their strong play in singles, as they were able to claim victory in five out of six matches, with key victories coming from Griva in the No. 1 spot (6-0, 6-1) and Ballard from the No. 2 spot (6-2, 6-3).

GVSU women’s tennis sweeps Wilmington on Sunday to close spring season

The Grand Valley State women’s tennis team won its final regular season match of the 2018-19 season with a 7-0 win over Wilmington on Sunday, April 7.

GVSU started off the match with a sweep in doubles, with Madison Ballard and Marija Leko winning from the No. 1 pairing, Vera Griva and Marily Canellopoulos winning from the No. 2 spot and Nicole Heiniger and Livia Christman winning from the No. 3 spot.

The true domination of the match shined through in singles, as every Laker listed was also able to win their doubles match, including Heiniger not giving up a point from the No. 6 spot (6-0, 6-0).

After Sunday, the Lakers now have an overall record of 21-4, and will now wait for the NCAA Division II Selection Announcement on May 7 to find out if they receive an at-large bid for the NCAA postseason.
