Grand Valley State has played its last 12 games at home, and let’s just say the Lakers really enjoy being at home.

On Saturday the Lakers squared off in Allendale against Ohio Dominican.

Game one of the twinbill ended up being closer than expected.

The Lakers were able to get to the seventh inning with a 5-3 lead over the Panthers with two outs and a two-run lead. Then ODU’s Kelsey Albanese hit a solo homer to left-center field.

“Sara likes to give me grey hairs,” GVSU coach Dana Callihan said of starting pitcher Sara Andrasik. “But I had all the confidence in the world in Sara.”

The Lakers were able to escape with a 5-4 victory in game one.

In game two of the twinbill, freshman starting pitcher Courtney Reinhold did as she has been doing all season and pitched a great game.

ODU gave Reinhold a bit of a scare in the first inning with an RBI single, but Reinhold contained herself and didn’t allow another run.

The Lakers, on the other hand, were able to plate seven runs in the game.

Freshman leadoff hitter Teagan Shomin was hit by a pitch in games one and two against Ohio Dominican. Shomin already held the single season record with 12 before facing Ohio Dominican, but moved the record to 14.

“You know, you just don’t move, it’s not that hard,” Shomin said. “We are college students so if it’s free you might as well take it.”

On Sunday the GLIAC’s top two teams were in action as the Lakers took on Tiffin.

The Lakers were riding a seven-game win streak heading into game one against Tiffin, but game one was more than the Lakers could bargain for.

Tiffin’s starting pitcher Kimmy Reynolds was able to go the distance while only allowing three Laker hits and giving up no runs.

Although the Lakers starter Andrasik didn’t allow her first hit until the fourth inning, she couldn’t hold them out all game. Tiffin was able to plate a 2-0 lead in the sixth inning and those two runs were all Tiffin needed to end the Lakers winning streak.

“That one stung a little bit,” Andrasik said. “It was a hard fought battle but they just caught a break; our defense played great.”

The Lakers came out swinging in game two, however.

Shomin led off and doubled off the first pitch of the game, and cleanup hitter McKenze Supernaw brought Shomin home with a single. Later in the inning, the bases were loaded for freshman Kaylie Rhynard who slapped a hit up the middle that went all the way to the center-field fence and scored two more runs.

GVSU’s lead was 5-0 when Tiffin batters reached base off starting pitcher Reinhold. Reinhold was in a bit of a jam, but got a strikeout and a lineout to short. With two outs, a grounder looked as if it was going into right field and would score some runs, but the ball hit the runner trying to advance from first to second and the runner was called out to end the inning.

By the fifth inning, the Lakers lead was at 9-0 and Reinhold was able to keep Tiffin quiet. She threw a shutout as the Lakers got the 9-0 victory.

The Lakers are off until Wednesday when they have their last home games of the season in a twinbill against Saginaw Valley State.
