GVPD to test emergency notification systems Friday, Nov. 3

The Grand Valley State University Police Department will be conducting an all-systems test of its emergency notification systems Friday, Nov. 3. This will be the GVPD’s first comprehensive test of its different emergency notification messaging platforms.

As part of the procedure, test messages will be sent via GVSUAlert!, the outdoor warning system (tornado siren testing followed by a voice message), the desktop notification system and the banner on the GVPD’s website home page.

The purpose of the test is to make sure each notification system is up and running properly. This will be the last tornado siren test until the spring.

Before the test, members of the GVSU community should make sure they have selected their preferred method(s) of contact for the GVSUAlert! system (phone call, text message, email) so they can determine if they are receiving the messages how they expect at the time of the test.

MoneySmart Lakers to host MoneySmart Week

MoneySmart Lakers, an organization within the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships, will host MoneySmart Week from Monday, Oct. 30, to Friday, Nov. 3. Events will take place on both the Allendale and Pew campuses. 

Events include workshops on topics such as budgeting, scholarships and FAFSA. Students who participate and attend multiple events will have chances to win prizes, and those who attend five different events and receive stamps from the events will be entered for a chance to win a scholarship.

Author Hank Meijer to lead Hauenstein Center discussion

Author Hendrik “Hank” Meijer will lead a discussion on Arthur Vandenberg, a U.S. senator from Grand Rapids who spearheaded bipartisan foreign policy decisions at the beginning of the Cold War. 

The discussion will take place Thursday, Nov. 2, at the DeVos Center’s Loosemore Auditorium from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The presentation will focus closely on Meijer’s book, “Arthur Vandenberg: The Man in the Middle of the American Century.”

Hauenstein Center to host next Wheelhouse Talk

Jim Keane, president and CEO of Steelcase, will lead a discussion Friday, Nov. 4, at the DeVos Center’s Loosemore Auditorium at 4 p.m. The presentation is a part of the Wheelhouse Talks series by the Hauenstein Center for Presidential Studies, designed to bring leaders in various fields to GVSU. Keane’s presentation is titled “Designing Leadership.”

Council for Exceptional Children symposium to take place on campus

The Council for Exceptional Children will have its 24th annual Education Symposium at Grand Valley State University. The event will take place Saturday, Nov. 4, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Kirkhof Center, Room 2215. 

The conference will include three breakout sessions on educational topics. The symposium is free and open to the public. Breakfast and lunch will be provided. Those interested in learning more can visit www.gvsu.edu/coe/cecs/.
