Wish you were here

Professor Deanna Morse brought her travels back to Grand Rapids for her 2011 ArtPrize entry.
Morse, a professor of film and video production at Grand Valley State University, is an independent film and video artist who specializes in animation and personal short films and videos.
“Postcards Unplugged: Wish you here…,” Morse’s entry, is a collection of six short video postcards from Spain, Hot Springs National Park, Porcupine Mountains State Park, the Ukraine and the artist’s yard.
“The first two [events] were very successful,” Morse said. “At the first, we made postcards, or folks wrote to friends on a postcard I gave them. I had made special ‘Wish you were here…’ stamps, which I gave to the participants. [There were] a variety of ages, and people met each other, had some interesting conversations about postcards and messages and sent off messages to friends. I also served fortune cookies, with their little messages.”
Each piece runs for about one to five minutes for a DVD no longer than 25 minutes. Each video postcard examines nature through the lens of time.
Morse will sell DVDs of the work to raise money for the film and video scholarship at GVSU. Morse also planned artist talks and family-friendly, hands-on events during “Postcards Unplugged,” which took place each Saturday during ArtPrize.
“This Saturday we will make postcards, write postcards, animate postcards and shoot some time-lapse,” Morse said. “Oh, and eat fortune cookies.”
Morse’s ArtPrize entry is at located at Westminster Presbyterian Church downtown.
