GVSU Women’s tennis beats Lake Superior State, 4-3
The Grand Valley State women’s tennis team improved to 4-0 on Saturday as they traveled to the upper peninsula and beat Lake Superior State, 4-3.
GVSU was able to claim a solid victory at the No. 1 doubles spot, with Marily Canellopoulos and Vera Griva winning a hard-fought match 6-4.
The key to the team’s victory was domination in the singles, as GVSU was able to win four of those six matches. Griva and Marija Leko won their matchups from the No. 2 and No. 3 spots, while Livia Christman and Nicole Heiniger won their matches from the No. 5 and No. 6 spots respectively.
The women’s tennis team looks to continue upon their hot start to the season, as they have two home matchups with Ashland on Saturday, Oct. 13 and Wayne State on Sunday, Oct. 14. Both matches are set to begin at 10 am.
GVSU DII Men’s Hockey opens season with 9-3 win over Michigan Tech
The Grand Valley State DII men’s hockey team started off the 2018-19 season on the right foot on Saturday, as they opened their season with a 9-3 win at home over Michigan Tech.
Junior Ryan Hein scored for the first goal of the season for the Lakers less than four minutes into the game. Nicholas Beers, Tommy Carey and Lucas Little also found the back of the net in the first period, leading the Lakers to a 4-1 lead.
The scoring didn’t stop there for GVSU, as Daniel DeBlouw, Howard Rose, Cameron Dyde, Austin Koleski and Zach Vitkuske also scored later in the game. Jared Maddock guarded the net the whole game for the Lakers, saving 17 of Michigan Tech’s 20 shots.
The GVSU DII men’s hockey team has this next weekend off, but they travel to Lewis University for two weekend matchups on Saturday, Oct. 19 and Sunday, Oct. 20. Saturday’s game starts at 7:30 pm, while Sunday’s game begins at 5 pm.
GVSU Soccer’s Madeline Becker wins Student Athlete of the Week
The Grand Valley State women’s soccer team has been dominant all reason long, and Madeline Becker has been a huge part of that. The freshmen’s quality play and hard work in the classroom makes her the Student Athlete of the Week presented by Ruth’s Chris Steak House.
Becker has had a very solid season for the Lakers so far as through 13 games, she has scored nine goals and passed two assists, converting on 25.7 percent of her shots on goal. Becker’s efforts have helped her team stay undefeated this season, winning their matches by a combined scoring margin of 49-3.
GVSU looks to stay undefeated this weekend, as they have two home matchups with Saginaw Valley State on Friday and Ashland on Sunday. Friday’s game starts at 7 p.m., while Sunday’s game starts at 1 p.m.
