Las Vegas candlelight vigil to take place at Calder Plaza
The Kenowa Hills Board of Education will host a candlelight vigil for Las Vegas Thursday, Oct. 5, where local leaders will motivate the community and speak out against unwarranted violence.
This event will be held in solidarity with the victims and the families of the victims of the Las Vegas shooting that took place Sunday, Oct. 1. This devastating shooting resulted in 59 deceased victims and more than 500 injured.
Sympathy, condolences and awareness will all be central themes of this event, which will take place from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Calder Plaza, located at 300 Ottawa Ave. NW in Grand Rapids.
GVSU to celebrate annual College Radio Day
Grand Valley State University is celebrating its annual College Radio Day Friday, Oct. 6, from noon to 3 p.m. at the Cook Carillon Tower.
This day, founded in December 2010, is meant to raise awareness of the countless radio stations available to college and high school students on campuses worldwide. The organizers of College Radio Day plan on celebrating the uniqueness of college radio in its independent avenues.
‘Funeral for Public Education’ set for Sunday, Oct. 8
In Grand Rapids, there will be a public mourning of the adversities the public school systems are said to have undergone at the hands of Education Secretary Betsy DeVos. Michigan Student Power Network will be hosting the “Funeral for Public Education” Sunday, Oct. 8, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Rosa Parks Circle.
It is during this time that all attending will take time away from ArtPrize and focus on the supposed threats to public schools and what overcoming these obstacles will look like for the future.
The hosts are asking guests to RSVP by clicking on the link on the Facebook event page. They are also asking guests to dress in black formal wear.
Monthly tornado testing at GVSU Allendale Campus
Grand Valley State University’s Allendale Campus will complete monthly planned testing of the tornado-warning siren system Friday, Oct. 6, at noon. This testing takes place every first Friday of the month.
This test will consist of a one-to-three-minute siren tone. This test will also occur in communities throughout Ottawa County.
All university members are expected to be aware of the safe areas on campus in the case of an actual weather emergency. Safety areas are identified on signs located in the interior hallways on the lowest floors of all buildings on campus. Refer to GVSU’s emergency weather policies for more information.
