Van Tubbergen named GLIAC South Player of the Week
Grand Valley State junior Jake Van Tubbergen was named GLIAC South Player of the Week for the opening week of the 2019-20 college basketball season. Van Tubbergen, a preseason All-GLIAC selection, earns his first career conference weekly honors.
Van Tubbergen was dominant in the Lakers 2-0 opening week, as the Lakers defeated regional foes Alderson Broaddus and Davis & Elkins. Van Tubbergen opened the season with a double-double, scoring 21 points – 16 in the first half – and snagged a career-best 16 rebounds as the Lakers defeated the Battlers 69-56 Saturday, Nov. 9.
His solid performances rolled into this past week, as in Thursday’s win against Truman State, Van Tubbergen scored a career-high 32 points to go along with nine rebounds to help lead their team to victory.
Women’s Cross Country team recognized as one of the most dominant teams of the decade
For the sixth time this decade, the Grand Valley State women’s cross country team is living out their title of National Champions. In an earlier post by the NCAA last week, the Lakers were named one of the five most dominating fall teams in all of college athletics in the past 10 years.
Having claimed championships in 2012, 2013, 2014, 2016 and 2018, GVSU is the only women’s cross country team with six national titles since 2010. The Lakers have won 19 consecutive Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) and NCAA Division II Regional titles to add to their resume.
In his 21st year at the helm of both programs, Jerry Baltes owns six national titles on the women’s side and one with the men. In 2013, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) opted to name the Women’s Program of the Year Award after Baltes to honor his continued dominance.
