College students away from home often do not have the chance to see their siblings. Grand Valley State University’s Campus Activities Board and Office of Student Life recognizes this and has purposefully created an opportunity for students to bring their siblings to campus and enjoy a weekend of fun at “Sibs and Kids” Weekend.

“Students can bring a sibling or a friend even,” Kendall Cantrell, Director of Special Events said. “Some siblings might be interested in Grand Valley and you get a real life experience of it.”

Sibs and Kids Weekend will be held Friday, Feb. 21, through Sunday, Feb. 23. Most of the events will take place in Kirkhof. There will be several events that students can enjoy with their siblings or children such as movies, carnival activities, crafts and much more. Wristbands are $5 per person. This will cover all events and food.

To kick off Sibs and Kids Weekend there will be a carnival held in the Kirkhof lobby. From 5-9 p.m. there will be games, prizes, snacks and several other activities to enjoy. There will be a create your own cereal bar with a wide variety of cereals to choose from and select a personal favorite.

“Different student organizations will host a carnival game of their choice with prizes you can win and candy,” Cantrell said.

“Lets Get Crafty VSCO Style” will be held from 5-9 p.m. in Kirkhof room 2215/2216. Students, siblings and friends come together to let their imaginations run wild during this creative hands on craft session.

“People can make their own scrunchies, laptop stickers and friendship bracelets,”  Cantrell said.

Later on Friday, starting at 8 p.m. there will be a trivia night that will feature a Disney Plus edition. This will be in the Grand River Room of Kirkhof and will run until 9:30. Following the trivia there will be a late night trivia session at 10 p.m. that will run until 11:30 p.m. in the Pere Marquette room.

“The Disney Plus trivia will be for the younger kids and the late night trivia will be for the older kids,” Cantrell said.

If you’re not a fan of trivia or crafts, there will be a improv group performing at 8 p.m. in Kirkhof Area 51. There will also be buttery popcorn and Angry Birds 2 playing in Kirkhof’s Big Screen Theatre if you just want to wind down.

After tons of activities on Friday, the entertainment will continue into Saturday, Feb. 22. CAB is teaming up with Community Service Learning Center to host a service event, which will take place from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and includes making toys for dogs. Simultaneously, open climb and open swim at the Rec Center will be going on all day. There will also be courts available to grab a ball and get active. From 2-4 p.m. “Canvas and Sip” will be taking place in Kirkhof room 2215 and 2216.

“You can paint a canvas and ACES is bringing beverages,” Cantrell said.

Comedy Magician Trent James will be performing at 5 p.m. in the Grand River Room of Kirkhof. Topping off the evening at 8 p.m. in the Kirkhof Center will be a Spa Night in room 2215 and 2216, where attendees can make their own DIY scrubs, face masks and bath bombs, and Music Bingo in the Pere Marquette of the Kirkhof Center.

On Sunday, Feb. 23, a breakfast filled with all you can eat buttermilk pancakes will take place at 10:00 a.m. in the Holton Hooker Multipurpose room. After breakfast, the West Michigan Human Society will be bringing in puppies for dog lovers of all ages to pet and play with in the Kirkhof Lobby.

“It’s the middle of the semester and this is a perfect time to distress and relax with siblings,” Cantrell said.
